Badly worn frets can result in irritating fret buzzes, and can even cause inaccuracy in intonation and a change in tone. If you see "pitting" in your frets where the strings make contact, chances are that some fret work is in your banjo's near future.
We offer our superior fret work to owners of Huber Banjos, and to any banjo owner who insists on work of the very highest quality. Our luthiers are experienced in refretting vintage instruments and are accustomed to the level of care necessary when very valuable instruments are on the bench.
A complete refret involves removing all of the frets and reinstalling new ones. After installing new frets, they are leveled and dressed. In this procedure, the frets are all filed down to a point where they are level, and are then recrowned to a rounded, convex shape. A complete refret is generally not necessary unless the majority of the frets are very badly worn, or if the frets have previously been leveled and redressed more than once.
Generally we can level and redress your frets, replacing only those that are severely worn.
